Pathology of temporomandibular joint (TMJ)

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) determines the movements of the mandible. Disorders of this joint are also known as Temporo Mandibular Disorders (TMD). The pathology of TMD is multifactorial and may present as a result of facial trauma, condylar fractures, ankylosis, condylar hyperplasia, rheumatoid arthritis, and benign or malignant neoplasms. TMJ dysfunctions require a conservative treatment phase and the use of intra-oral mobile devices (occlusal splint or occlusal bite). In other cases various types of surgical techniques are indicated.
